Glyphs.

A small written language for piano technique, started from Hanon. One round sign says what the hand does. Glyphs for the first five exercises are shown here; the rest come with the full course.

Center

The main move of the exercise.

Eight sockets

Clockwise from the top: the eight sixteenth notes of the measure, like one lap of a sonar sweep.

Hatched socket

An extension, jump or contraction, with the two fingers beside it.

Gray dot

A fill.

Read the text under each glyph like this: EXT | 1 ext 1>2 | 2-7 fill | 8 con 2>1 = main move extension; slot 1 is an extension from finger 1 to 2; slots 2 to 7 are fills; slot 8 is a contraction from 2 to 1. These rules are a first draft and will change as more exercises are studied.
